These are fun and easy to make-a
great first wet felting project for adults or children.
To make these you will need:
Plastic eggs (approx.1.5”-2” tall)
Wool roving (1 ounce will make several chicks)
Small amount of wool felt
Dish soap and water
1-To
start, tape up the eggs with a durable tape, like duct tape. This keeps
the eggs from popping open during the felting process.
2-Take
a small amount of wool roving and wrap it aroun d
the egg.
Add on
more layers, always changing the direction for each
additional layer. The fibers going in different directions makes the
felting happen more easily. You will need about 3-4 thin layers of wool
roving to cover the eggs completely.
3-Holding
the egg in your hand, dip it into a bowl of soapy water. A good felting
mixture is 1TBS of dish soap to 1 quart (1 litre) of water.
4-Now
gently squeeze the wool around the egg. This will help to keep the wool
in place and after 1-2 minutes of squeezing, will form a felted “skin”
on the egg.Now the wool should be a little stronger-it’s starting to
felt. You can roll the egg around in your hands to really get the
felting going. Alternate the rolling action, with the squeezing for
about five minutes. Now your egg should be quite well felted and ready
to be rinsed. If it still seems very loose and not felted, continue
rolling and squeezing for a further 5 minutes.
5-Rinse
well in warm water to remove all the soap.
6-Cut
an opening in the bottom of the egg-the widest
part, make the opening just big enough that you will be able to pop out
the egg. I like to felt the egg again a little at this point -with the
plastic egg still inside. This softens the cut edge of the wool. Pop out
the plastic egg and reshape it on your finger. Let it dry completely.
7-Out
of orange felt, cut out a small diamond for a bea k,
and twosmall
feet. Sew the feet in place on the bottom edge of the puppet, using whip
stitch or blanket stitch. Sew the beak in place through the middle of
the beak. This will create the fold in the beak. Embroider two black
eyes on either side of the beak, using either French knots, or just by
sewing small knots.
Now your little finger puppet is
complete! You may have to make a few more to fill the nest! You can also
make a wool egg for the chick to hatch from, by following steps 1-6,
using a larger plastic egg as the form, and white (or light brown!)
wool. In step 6-make the opening a circle, instead of a slit. Then you
have a nice little egg home for the chick or other spring treasures!
